DIY Summer Necklace + Printable Kate Spade Inspired “Live Colourfully” Printable!
My favourite thing about August is summer parties. My least favourite thing about August is summer parties. I’m a contrary person. But really, as much fun as August parties are – those lingering twilight dinners on the deck and pool parties that last forever – it is impossible to find a good present in the summer. In the spring there’s always pretty scarves for April chills and in the winter there are cozy throws and in the fall there are harvest scented candles. Trust me, I love giving gifts. But summer is the worst. What are you supposed to buy people in the summer? Bikinis? Yeah, have fun when your friends leave you. Beach books? Who as ACTUALLY had time to go read on the beach this summer? Spoiler alert: anybody who says they have are lying. #sorrynotsorry
Really though, where are those perfect gifts in the summer? Answer – right here my lovely lady friends (and maybe gentlemen, I don’t know, here’s to hoping).
The best gift you can give in the summer is bright and bold and fun accessories to throw over a sun dress or jazz up a cocktail mini. I am declaring it right now. And what is more fun than making your own adorable chunky bead necklace, and packaging it up cute with our Kate Spade inspired printable? I know I know, I had you at Kate Spade.
To make a chunky bead necklace, first raid the clearance section of the jewelry aisle at Michaels. There is almost always something on sale that will work. I found these oversized faux pearls (ironically ones I think I paid full price for back in May when we made our moms some classy necklaces – and then fully stole them) for $2. I had the rest of the supplies lying around from various other projects with jewelry, but you can also pick up rope or chain, crimping beads, and closures in the same section.
First, unless you really score and find some pre-made colourful beads, paint those suckers. I picked the brightest hues I could find and then sprayed them with a glossy sealant once they were dry. I have a habit of getting caught in rainstorms and imagine my friends do also, and water + unsealed painted beads seems like a nightmare for blouses everywhere.
String those babies onto your rope or chain, and use a crimping bead to seal up each end (if you use rope, obvs). Crimping beads are amazing, and really easy. You just shove the ends of your string into the bead and then squeeze the hell out of it with pliers. It holds everything in perfectly. Think of it is as the Spanx of jewelry making.
