This may be headline news these days, but there’s more to do in the city this weekend then TIFF. And if you’re feeling a little over (or under!) whelmed by the fever that is international media attention and movie stars all over Toronto, you’re probably ready for a break. You’re in luck, because it’s time for the Weekender, and we have a few things us normal people can enjoy. The A-listers can have their red carpet, we have indie art and craft shows!
If you haven’t been fortunate enough to take in the glory that is Wicked then I’ve found the ticket you need to purchase immediately. Wicked is easily my favourite musical. Behind maybe Mamma Mia which doesn’t event count because it’s a classic. It’s probably tied with Cabaret, although it’s harder to drag Justin to that one. My grandparents took Justin and I to see Wicked a few years ago when we were living in Ottawa and I was instantly obsessed. Fastforward to today and it’s in Toronto and I’m desperate to see it again. It’s funny, it’s adorable, it’s sweet, you’ll laugh you’ll cry etc. etc. just buy a ticket here.
Queen West Art Crawl
If you’re feeling artistic, why not check out some art in the park all weekend at Trinity Bellwoods? They’re hosting the Queen West Art Crawl, sharing and celebrating the art and culture of the neighbourhood. The Crawl features over 250 artists and artisans showcasing and selling their pieces. There are tours kicking off every 20 minutes from Artscape Youngplace as well as some food vendors for when you feel like feeding your body (you know, as in “as well as your soul”? GET IT?) Get more details on their website here.
If you’re a Toronto blogger (and the chances are decent that if you’re here you may be!) then you should DEFINITELY be at BlogPodium this weekend! The day long conference on Saturday is hosted at the Fairmont Royal York and is full of the amazing, creative, and MEGA TALENTED bloggers that we’re obsessed with, and this year we are so excited to be a part of it too! There are a ton of super cool seminars and workshops, plus the opportunity to network with all your fellow bloggers (and okay, once you meet them face to face it’s just one text away from brunch amIright?). Learn more and get your tickets (they’re almost 95% sold out!) here.
Toronto Flower Market
If you haven’t heard before, Saturday is the second last day of the Toronto Flower Market. That means that a) SUMMER IS OVER OMG and b) if you aren’t at BlogPodium I don’t know why you aren’t buying some gorgeous blooms at the market. This year the flower market is held at 1056 Queen St (just West of Ossington) from 10-3pm. The outdoor market is your chance to browse some pretty locally grown flowers and wares from local greenhouses. You can shop the stalls of high quality, affordable flowers and ask the local growers and vendors questions. It’s the perfect way to spend your afternoon…after brunch of course, we’re not savages. Get more info here.
TBC Doughnut Eating Contest
Guys the level at which I am overwhelmingly excited to share this one is unmentionable. First of all, it’s DOUGHNUTS. This is my favourite weekend snack of LIFE, and you get the chance to raise some money for a fun cause while shoving your face with vegan doughnuts it’s like the event was made for Toronto locals. The contest is put on by Through Being Cool Vegan Baking Co. and all proceeds go to the Toronto Walk for Farm Animals on behalf of Farm Sanctuary. The first 12 people to collect $100 get to compete, and in case doughtnuts isn’t enough icnentive, there’s also some sweet prizes from Sadie’s Diner and Juice Bar, Hot Beans, Lipstick & Dynamite, and more. Enter the contest or check it out for free! The event is at 2pm at TBC, but get more details here.
That should keep you busy over the weekend! If none of that appeals, don’t forget there are still countless TIFF events you can check out, not to mention a bunch of restaurants offering some movie star worthy menus. Movies and food, that’s basically where it’s at in the city right now.
So get out your day planners and text your friends, you’re ready to make some solid plans for the weekend!
