There are a lot of walls in this apartment. It seems like a weird problem to have, but in certain areas I feel like it looks like we haven’t even moved in, because the walls are so bare. They’re also concrete, so getting Justin to put stuff up is a battle – and one I have to choose wisely. That being said, I’ve spent two years sneaking new wall-filling projects up here and there. We’ve gotten to a point where there is only one long bare wall in the bedroom and some awkward hallway walls I’m uncertain can ever be fixed.
But that bedroom wall. It haunts me every morning. I have gone through various arguments for that wall:
a) Paint it a bold colour
b) Wallpaper the whole thing with a fun pattern
c) Create some sort of pretty and casual frame situation
Justin has basically vetoed all of the above, and desperate I landed on the realization that with a few well chosen pieces of art I could fill it up in a way that won’t make it look like a psycho decorated my apartment, AND will mean I don’t murder my boyfriend in his sleep with the drill he refuses to use in our concrete walls.
When I stumbled upon this adorable polaroid heart print from Minted I was obsessed. But I don’t have $200 for something I hang on the wall (I reserve that for something I carry on my arm and stash my stuff in it). And that’s when I decided I could DIY something very similar, and you can too!
All you need is some bristol board, a frame (I got mine at Ikea, because that’s where you go when you need stuff that looks 10x more expensive then it is) and some polaroids. There are a couple options for this. Obviously, if you have a Polaroid camera you may have a bunch of these lying around. You could also just print normal pictures. OR, you can use a site like Social Print Studio to turn your Instagram snaps into pretty polaroid works of art – like we did. It cost me $15 for 48 of my favourite Party Girl Instagram shots, which was perfect!
*You’ll notice it’s still not up on my wall. That’s the next step. Depending on your situation you may or may not have to add “convince/nag/be generally unbearable to live with until your boyfriend puts it up” to your tutorial.
